Female characters move more merch outside of shounen jump stuff, which is unapologetic fujo central since the late Heisei era, so it makes more sense to leave the main character aside so it can be disregarded and make guys either self-insert more easily or just ignore it and focus on the cute girls.
Like how a lot of CGDCT shows are like harems without a main character so you can watch a lot of cute heroines interact with each other.
