When you're reacting to it for the first time you have a pretty negative reaction, I know I sure did, but after coming back to the series years later I appreciate a lot of the little details a lot more. Reading/watching the series after you already know all the secrets is pretty rewarding. You notice little foreshadowed details, or recontextualize how a certain character reacted to something. Also helps that the anime fixed up some of the awkward dialog in this scene.
