In Western folklore and fantasy goblins are very intelligent and sneaky. Tricksters. Liars. They set traps, steal shit, tinker with stuff, and usually outsmart people instead of just brute forcing everything. Not good guys, but not inherently evil either. But in anime and manga, they are shown as irredeemable rapist trash species. That's not even Western goblin lore. That feels way closer to oni or hentai orc logic. Like JRPGs needed a weak humanoid enemy you could grind early game and goblins got stuck as the default punching bag. Then edgy fantasy doubled down and went “yeah make them rape elves so nobody feels bad killing them.” At this point anime goblins aren't goblins at all. They're just small green rape oni wearing a Western fantasy name. So is this just decades of lazy genre recycling or did Japan ever actually look at goblin folklore beyond ruining their reputation?

Japanese fantasy has nothing really to do with western fantasy anymore. Consider it an offshoot of Dragon Quest and other JRPGs (which themselves were offshoots of wizardy and ultima)I guess the LOTR movies and Harry Potter had an influence too.

I don't know much about fantasy besides the Elder Scrolls. There the goblins are also very feral especially the Arena ones.
