I would've liked for the story to incorporate the other villages more in general. There could have been more attempts at cooperation among the villages to defeat the Akatsuki so we could gradually build up to all the characters coming together for the war arc. Even the opposite could have been cool where we'd see rivaling villages trying to exploit the situation as an opportunity to weaken each other which The Akatsuki could use to their advantage. It'd be great to see the villages fighting and scheming against each other for the whole series then create the alliance and come together against a common enemy.
