I think it's just a western thing that when you see something you aren't familiar with you just go "oh its this kind of story" and judge it through that narrow lens. Remember that idols are incredibly popular in Japan, so the idea of a story that portrays idols as lame and rock bands as cool doesn't really work the same there. I don't really see the real band as an idol band either though, needs to act and dress cuter for that, I saw a stream of Ai's VA playing a game and that was a completely different impression with how over the top cute she acted; there was also a moment where one of the daidus members wen't "kyaaa I dropped my tail" during the 2nd anniversary in a way I could never imagine the toges doing. They also don't do the one on one handshake/greetings you would expect from an idol group. The only thing you can really hit them with is that they don't make their own music like the characters in the show.
