Watching the new Digimon made me realize something. Characters like Friede and Kyo are rare in the monster taming/catching genre. You usually follow the unexperienced kid in a new world, but here, you have the leader who is already an expert and willing to get into a fight to protect his team, only if they know their teammates can't win.
