>>284555432I watched the OVA recently (I saw Decode years ago and never got around to the OVA) and I was disappointed by it, like it was good for what it was but it feels very much like a rough draft, I can see why the mangaka rebooted years later. The MC originally was lot more annoying and Birdy felt more generic along with the villains.
>>284556167I actually liked the characterization in the OVA better, though the story is thinner. Tsutomu is a typical directionless teenager, and Birdy is smart but impulsive. They balance each other well. It's still one of my favorites. I even have the DVD.
The only things I don't like about Decode are the Arita Shion subplot that went nowhere and the unnecessary love interests. It should have focused on the alien conspiracy more specifically instead of using the first two seasons for buildup.
Somebody need to relicense the series.

There's some signs over in Japan that the era of homogenization is starting to finally unravel but I think Decode wouldn't fly today.

I love the episode where tsutomu gets dragged to space, and i love the freaky alien things like the ryunka or seeing birdy's past in detail. Not to mention i really like the plot being directly tied to one character close to the mc, makes the whole thing feel more personal. I think the OVA did have superior atmosphere, and i like that tsutomu is more proactive in helping birdy. I think the OVA could have developed into the stronger story if it had been given another slate of episodes and incorporated more from the original Manga like the rogue CIA agents with alien limb transplants or Birdy's career in the Federation police (which would later be incorporated into Decode).
