If a new adaptation sticks closer to the manga people complain, but if it deviates from what people consider the "true" version, even if the original adaptation is the odd one out, people will complain. Hell, look at the 2017 version of Kino no Tabi. I saw people claiming Kino would have never stayed more than 3 days at a location even though there was a reason given, simply because the way the 2003 adaptation did things was considered the "true" version.

This also applies to the sclerae and highlights. It's an unfortunate drawback of digicolor that's always been around but metastasized in the late 00s. Digicolor artists' perception of brightness is distorted by essentially staring directly at a light bulb all day whereas the paint on cels has to reflect it from an analog source. Thus the picture is the sum of the ink, physical light source, and camera, and the cel artist gets a much more realistic sense of space and midtones. Good master scans show a subtle off-white coloring on the cels for this reason.Traditional painting also gives an inherently better sense because real pigment takes full advantage of the human eye's color range, whereas digicolor artists are probably using IPS displays with horrendous light bleed.
