I finally started reading The Hunter's Gonna Lay Low. Even though anon brought it up probably more than a year ago I put it to one side thinking I've read a lot of dungeon break series, what could possibly make me interested in one where its only unique appeal is being canon BL. Naturally I hadn't actually read a summary to know the plot (or maybe the summaries were unhelpful? That happens a lot), otherwise I would have known it was playing with some of my favourite dungeon break cliches. Which is great because if it hadn't been for the hidden strength fugitive hook I would not have taken to the love interest, Sayoung, at all. I'm still not entirely sold on the looks, but the mask is growing on me, and by the time they made the contract I got what the author was going for with him. It's the kind of moe I see more in danmei, though that makes extra sense that it takes a while to become apparent. In the final episode, we get a glimpse to Kahaku's past, where his clan bemoans him being born male because it means he can't carry Fushi's child. For me, I see this in two ways:>1. By the end of the series, Kahaku accepts that he wholly loves Fushi regardless of the form he takes, so he doesn't have to cope by convincing himself Fushi is actually a girl. You could argue there's a bit of gay panic happening here, since this is set in medieval times after all—being attracted to another man probably isn't accepted, so Kahaku has to tell himself it's not gay if he bangs Fushi in his boy form because spiritually "Fushi is a girl.">2. Kahaku's insistence on Fushi being a girl could play back to his childhood. If Fushi were to permanently take on a female form, then it could be possible for Kahaku to conceive a child with him, thus fulfilling the role he was born for.In either case, Kahaku realizes the only thing that matters is his love for Fushi, whether Fushi be a boy or girl or even a dog, an elderly man, and so on. Having a child? Conforming to societal expectations? None of those matter; only Fushi matters. I thought this was a pretty interesting, yet subtle, character development for Kahaku and I wonder how many people caught onto it.TL;DR: Kahaku deeply wants the orbussy.

I think I remember seeing a comment by Matsui in a nigewaka volume extra where he outright said that one of the things that helped him decide on doing a manga about the Nanboku-cho period was that he didn't have to give the men ugly hair.
