During the "kidnap Erin" Arc I quietly hypothesized to myself that the Titans themselves must be caused by some kind of virus and Erin was some kind of mutation or recessive genetic occurrence. When Reiner and Bertolt started talking about a "village", and the sheer length they went to kidnapping Erin once they found out he could "shift", I figured there must be part of a much larger (more advanced and with way more resources) world/community that was willing to do absolutely anything to get their hands on more titan-shifters.
