The bleach ln are actually enjoyable and fix lots of issues with the manga. But Kubo doesn't even claim to be a good writer, just a good artist. Remember how Itachi and Sasuke had a full genjutsu battle and had to disentangle themselves from it by fighting out a battle in their illusions? Sharingan cannot inherently see through genjutsu. It makes it easier to spot incongruities because of the sharp visual acuity and able to read detail, but it's not like an illusion dispersing eye beam. Itachi is a genjutsu specialist, so his ability to ensnare people in his illusions is superb enough to overcome the minor advantage that Sharingan provides.

Maybe he was mistaken and was making assumptions or maybe it truly was a fabled technique that you can learn. He had no reason to fight the Hokage or 4-tail Naruto, or sacrifice Kimimaro and the other powerful ninjas. He sacrificed so many things for nothing really.
