I have never seen a ghibli film. Can someone explain what is their appeal that makes them so popular? To me they all seem like le artsy spritual boring wastes of time. Is it the art style?

Maybe you should watch one and form your own opinion.

Don't bother. They aren't made for mentally challenged otaku-trash like yourself who consumes art for trivia dumps and convoluted midwit plotlines.

You walk into La Cinematheque, turn your brain off harder than if you were watching One Piece and grab a popcorn. The animated scenes jump into your brain spores as you say "ah, now that's a true Motion Picture (Japan). Nay, a Douga" as you take a sip of wine. The wine is to your right and the popcorn to the left. You take turns with the popcorn, movie screen and the wine.

Miyazaki wanted to depict his autistic hyperfocus for planes in movie form and was told that he needed a story to go along with it. That's every ghibli movie in a nutshell

Ghibli movies are the japanese equivalent of the classic animated disney films.

they are also some of the few non-disney media that disney adults tolerate

Watch Future Boy Conan, Nadia, and/or the old Anne Of Green Gables if you wanna get Ghibli’s appeal but can only do it through long-running TV anime. All are Ghibli adjacent and were worked on by either Miyazaki or Takahata in some way.

Or better yet just read the Nausicaa manga, Miyazaki peaked there and it’s his single best work.
