Why cant we have Anime like this anymore
Just 27 episode of a wild ride with no breaks or logic
But no everything now has to be serialized with open ending to continue and milk forever with endless filter shit
I'm just gonna post all the eyecatch frames just because I feel like it.

Because the audience has changed. In the past people went into fiction for novelty and adventure, seeing new worlds explored and great journeys enacted. Today that crowd has been silenced by a much larger crowd that uses fiction as emotional management, usually from their failures in reality so there isn't any patience for a more ambitious tale, a quick power fantasy or smut would do just fine for much less effort.

>>
>>284626797
He was great and I wish he got to do more before he died.

Part of the issue I had with Gurren Lagann was that nobody but Simon had actual spiral power until the VERY end of the series. You could probably argue that Kamina had it too when he overpowered the lockouts on Gurren but he died shortly after and all his other feats were performed with Lagann attached so you could attribute it to Simon rather than him
>>
>>284627307
I think Kittan did everything that mattered. He was the second glue of the Gurren brigade: Kamina was pulling everyone ahead with his bravado, Simon was the one actually forging the path ahead, and Kittan was the "glue" and heart. He got not one but TWO great sacrifice scenes.
>>
>>284625769
>>284626728
I think with enough spiral power it would be possible
>>
>>284618581
>or logic
I love that Gurren Lagann is so subtle with its themes and symbolism people legitimately think it's nonsense.
Lagann has a drill/spiral growing from its third eye.
"As above, so below" is painted in virtually every aspect of the show.
Gnostic imagery and Yaldabaoth/Demi-urgic authorities on various levels.
All those Gattais revolving around the unification of opposites (Mind and Body or Mind and Heart being the most obvious and most used)
The final battle is entirely decided based on the Law of Attraction.
Simon LITERALLY punches a hole in the firmament with Arc Gurren.
It's a story about going "beyond surface level" to reach something deeper and more meaningful with the spiral of knowledge.
It's such a great show and speaks to a man's soul on every level.

My drill is the drill that will pierce the egg

>>
>>284627516

>>
>>284627516

>>284627553

>>284627598
>>
>>284627443
But thats just the thing, Beastmen can't use spiral power :(
>>
>>284627667
Not with that attitude.
>>
>>284627667
Boota literally does and in the movie, so does Viral.
>>
>>284627696
Boota is not a Beastman and Viral in the movie is as far as I understand it a mutation caused by being basically bathed in Simons spiral energy for a prolonged amount of time.
Beastmen were genetically engineered by Lord Genome to not produce spiral power.
>>
>>284627516
Yeah, I'm not saying every single one of these interpretations is right and intended but at least some of them, and some are even kind of explicit too. Gurren Lagann is one of these anime that require some level of engagement, but if you meet it on these terms it answers back.
>>
>>284618581
Whenever someone asks me when was the last truly good mecha my mind goes immediately to TTGL thinking that it only came out a few years ago not nearly 2 decades ago. There's some stuff I like now but nothing has ever hit the same beats as TTGL or what came prior like GaoGaiGar or the Getter Robo OVAs. Maybe i'm just old.
>>
>>284627529
>>284627667
No no no, I mean a spiral-race using that power to make a beastwoman fertile. You can't just pierce the egg, you have to create it first.
>>
>>284627516
The dichotomy of underground and above-ground isn't about the gnostic junk, it's from the anti-imperialist concept of subaltern positioning as reflected in Libera Me's hip hop segment.
>>
>>284627936
Yeah things can't possibly have more than one meaning, that's impossible.
>>
>>284628005
That as above so below thing just doesn't fit though. The underground and the above-worlds have entirely different meanings in the series.
>>
>>284628053
And in the term 'as above, so below', heaven and earth have entirely different meanings to. The meaning of the statement is that things on a higher strata are reflected and paralleled on a lower one.
Giha village chief -> Lord Genome -> The Anti-spiral.
Viral was used by Genome the same way Lord Genome was used by the Anti-Spiral.
Stuff like that.
>>
Reminder the AntiSpiral was Simon's final teacher, and right about a lot of things.
>>
I liked Green Lasagna but I really want to know what the initial plan was because it's very clear they swerved pretty hard after the episode 1 teaser opening
>>
>>284628204
It was going to be Aim for the Top 3!
I bet my money on it.
>>
>no logic
TTGL's internal logic works almost flawlessly all show. The logic also jives perfectly with what the show's theme is.
You can trust me because in stark contrast I fucking despise Diebuster made by 95% of the same people that made TTGL. Character and plot go right out the fucking window so they can get to the next titty shot or fight sequence.
>>
>>284627307
The series was very aware of who its main character was, and barely gave focus to anyone but him. And when it did, it was mostly for his sake. Kamina as a mentor, Roshiu, Genome or Viral as foils, Nia as comfort animal + damsel in distress.
>>
>>284628104
When you oversimplify it to that degree to you can apply it to almost any story with progression
>>
>>284628481
Right, forgot I'm talking to people who can't connect dots even when shown how to.
>>
There's always that one anon who gets upset that entertainment isn't always mindless and a talented team of people put effort into their thing.
>>
>>284628491
That's the point though, there are no dots to connect. That phrase has no bearing on the ideas and themes in the series.

>Why cant we have Anime like this anymore
because it's much harder to make money off of anime, especially original anime nowadays. Remember, TTGL came out in 2007, way before streaming was a thing. The anime aired, it was successful, and if you wanted to watch it again you basically /had/ to buy the blue-ray (in japan) unless you had much more tech savvy than today. this is not the case in year of our lord twenty twenty five. Anime even then had issues with profitability, but BD sales, toys, models, licensing to tv stations in SEA, pachinko games, made up for it for original titles. BD sales are now gone, the japanese economy has continued to circle the drain, and streaming is not nearly as profitable for (most) shows as tv licensing (the japanese also are still in 1997 and don't understand streaming well). So now, the safer bet is anime as adverts for already-somewhat-successful manga/LNs, and if it makes more money along the way like frieren, all the better. most studios are risk averse, so you get saleable anime, not necessarily good anime

>>

>>
>>284628698
>streaming is not nearly as profitable for (most) shows as tv licensing (the japanese also are still in 1997 and don't understand streaming well)

Not just the Japanese, it's less profitable for all entertainment EXCEPT established IPs with many entries and high attachment rates (barring a few handpicked winners)

Less money going to more entrants rewarding repeat consumption instead of new production
>>
>>284618581
Beyond the profitability that other anons mentioned (which is why also you won't see multiple season originals. The days of shit like Noein being 26 episodes or Eureka Seven having more episodes than most famous series today are over) a lot of Japanese creatives simply don't really have the hunger to create and adapt their own original stories. Very often they'll first try to do multiple projects at once for a series of their design, with an anime as a final piece were it be to be successful. Doesn't help that they also have to pander to the streaming market, which is majority SEA and Chinese. Next time you question yourself why the Vending Machine Isekai is a big success remember the average Indonesian or chin hast to watch it.
