And that's what people usually point to when they say they prefer originals over adaptation but it really doesn't seem to make a difference.

If it strays from that it would just run into the same issue with originals where even though they can plan it still turns out shit. And even an adaptation that does its own things generally sticks to some aspects of the source, so there's more constraint there.
