Hunter x Hunter (2011) ran for 140+ episodes weekly for years with minimal filler and decent production value throughout? How is this possible, and why don't we get shows like this anymore? Will the new Psyren be like this or will it be multiple seasons?

It's finished, get the fuck over it.

This isn't a thread to gush over HxH I'm just genuinely interested in the logistics of this and why it doesnt seem to happen anymore. Most series are seasonal now, running for around 12 episodes to around double that, with some exceptions

The first like, two years of its existence were marred with subpar to outright bad animation, direction, storyboarding, and just generally it felt like a cheap cashgrab, it only really started to become something kind of good around 2013.

Hunter x Hunter started in 1998. Nobody is giving popular manga series a 10 year head start today.

That's why I mentioned Psyren, the whole series is finished so I wonder if they'll just adapt it start to finish

Hunter x Hunter is unique in the sense that it's considered one of the best manga of all time.
So they also wanted to make one of the best anime of all time.
99.x% of the time that is not the case. So why expect top quality for something that is not a top tier work.
No comment on Psyren good or bad. I'm simply not too familiar with it.

>ran for 140+ episodes weekly for years with minimal filler
All arcs animated were already written
>and decent production value throughout
Mangaka had 3 other successful anime adaptations before hxh 2011, and is known to be a temperamental bitch (with good reason to at least half the time)
>why don't we get shows like this anymore?
Very few manga are as long, successful and a sure return of the investoor's investment
>Will the new Psyren be like this or will it be multiple seasons?
I doubt they'll give Psyren, of all things, such a treatment. I think the next new adaptation with high-ish production values, if any, will be Kagurabachi, people gush over it, it lends itself well to detailed animation and merch, and there's probably enough for 50 episodes or more if they don't rush the story. Anime larger than 13 episodes is rare nowadays because anime is supposed to be a gateway drug to the original work, cucking animeonlies out of the entire story is one hell of a marketing strategy if the work being adapted doesn't bleed money with merch outside BDs then you can expect no season 2 ever.
Fuck, now I miss Horizon.

Rewatch the series. There multiple times where the production is meh. The thing is, Hunter is one of the least flashy or crazy action heavy battle Shonen.
It’s much easier to hide meh production when you have less action to worry about.
Add that with high budget and slave work and you get 2011

Satelight can barely handle a single cour after all their talent left

It seems pretty clear to me that it has to do with how much material there is to adapt across a certain span of time. Madhouse started adapting a manga from 1998 in 2011, and the manga had a point that Madhouse could satisfyingly end the anime with as of 2012. Bones had a similar time adapting 2001's FMA in 2009, but when they undertook adapting 2014's MHA in 2016, the FMA/HxH treatment just wasn't possible given the existing and prospective material, so they opted to portion it into several seasons as considered the next best thing.

>it's considered
It isn't. It's a piece of crap that has no value and is only aggrandized because of this unnerving cult of personality mindless NPC no-life consumers have built around Togashi as the Frank Miller of Shonen.

What's/who's your favorite manga/mangaka?

Thats just not true.

It is. The anime is largely just ugly unless you're easily impressed by incredibly bright colours and the same two or three musical motifs being used ad nauseum. I'd honestly say the Yorkshin arc is one of the ugliest battle anime arcs I had seen at the time.

The 99' version oozes an insane amount of liveliness, on the other hand. Just this year I found out a lot of extremely talented anime directors worked on it back in the day, I immediately thought of OPM S1 when I read that.

Too much anime is being made and in demand for a studio to invest all their resources into an anime every single week. In the past less anime were being produced or were giving full series as studios were mostly focused on the big hits. Nowadays smaller to middling sized projects have much bigger audience to demand given more time and energy onto them.

Early HxH2011 arcs probably suffer a little because the material is dated. It lacks some of that fire of a new hot manga getting a hot new anime

Kids' shows do that all the time.
