So if you want to be convincing you have to actually think in specific ways. Why does that matter? Magic is about imagination in Frieren. So if they start to have expressions of worry or concern or fear that means they're thinking they're going to lose or that they're out of options which means mentally their magic will follow suit and collapse. Deadpan expressions means they're concentrating and calculating all the ways they're going to win. If they slip up they die.

Ehre figures out that *something* is wrong during the fight against Fern, when she says that somethings off, but she isn't skilled enough to realize what it is thats bugging her. Its because she's been hammering Fern's shield but Fern's mana level hasn't changed. Fern is appearing to cast spells without actually expending any mana doing so, because the mana reading that she puts out is a lie.
