It's not well written and was hard carried by the editor. You can pinpoint the exact chapter Naruto totally shits the bed and then lays in it and continues to crap itself.

At that point DBZ, One Piece were also quite popular but they were perceived as cartoons which one would consume through dubbing. Naruto started opening the gates of Japanese anime to the broader public alongside Bleach, and oldfags didn't like that at all

I wrote off Naruto 20+ years ago because of its popularity/narutards of the era but I never gave it an honest shot. Maybe I'll download the first few episodes today and see how it is.
