Why is Diebuster so good?
>>284645591i like it but i was also dissapointed due to me expecting die buster to be primarily a mecha show like gunbusterdidnt expect nono is the actual "mecha"
>>284645591Because Gainax made it at their peak, on their own schedule, while they still had their full roster.
i love black holes
>>284645591It dropped the boring hard science shit for fun explosions. Also no underage nip slips or weird age gap relationships.
>>284645591The premise is more interesting than the actual show. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it, just like his later GQuuuuuux, which had the same problems.
>>284645591Because it is a refutation of the false consciousness of Gunbuster.
>>284647283>the false consciousness of Gunbuster?
>>284645591It's groovin' magic.
>>284645591screaming aliens were original back then.
>>284645591Enjoyable characters. Good designs. Great animation. Plot felt disjointed but still a good show overall.
>>284645591Never understood the dislike towards it. It's really fun and it has a lot of the Gainax hallmarks that made them the fan favorite studio for many including myself.
>>284649210I can think of multiple issues.>they went all in on character designs due to the 20th anniversary, which resulted in too many unique characters that split focus too much for the runtime>the timeskip was not conveyed properly, various elements were part of a reveal but post-reveal was unsatisfying>the teenagers are annoying and the original theme of unity against cosmic annihilation is lost
Because Nono could suck the bend out of a river.
>>284649290I bet that all sounded very smart in your head, but it's complete nonsense when written out.
>>284649406Ah, I see. Kill yourself.
>>284645591Is it? Ive heard it's garbage compared to gunbuster so I avoided it. Or at least, it's a bad sequel that undermines the original and would have been better as its own thing. Is that not the case?
>>284649561It's not bad as a sequel, actually. It's a bit bland in itself.
>>284646063This cut has always driven me crazy. She gets into the inazuma kick pose and then she just doesn't do it. Even after watching it dozens of times knowing exactly what will happen, it still feels wrong.
>>284649756Have you expectations been... subverted?
>>284649561It definitely undermines the original in a lot of ways, and is also garbage compared to gunbuster. You heard right.
>>284645591>>>/wsg/6056063
>>284645591I liked Gunbuster better
>>284649561it feels more like a proto gurren lagann instead of a sequel to gunbuster. in fact, it doesn't feel like gunbuster at all.
>>284648122The central conceit of Gunbuster is that if you just try hard enough, if you just destroy yourself in pursuit of your goals, you'll eventually get what you want.
>>284646850>Also no underage nip slipsBut this is a point against it.
Of course Diebuster is better. Gunbuster has like one good episode. But since it happens to be the finale, that's all the mouthbreaters with their goldfish memory remember, and not the dumb Aim for the Ace parody, the terrible melodrama about Whatshisface's death, and the general utter lack of consistency in tone and direction.
>>284647283Go away, pretentious video-essayist.>>284649561It's too much of its own thing to undermine Gunbuster. As its own thing though, it's pretty schizophrenic to follow. The only good parts are Nono's character and the last couple episodes when the plot is elaborated on.
>>284650091>Go away, pretentious video-essayist. You don't really get more blatant than Nono stopping Lal'c from throwing the earth at the space monster.>It's too much of its own thing to undermine Gunbuster. Not at all. It's a response and refutation of the ideas in Gunbuster. It comes up repeatedly. https://youtube.com/watch?v=Fy1lp8O20n8This scene for example, very closely mirror a scene from Episode 4 of Gunbuster and it's like Nono is speaking directly to Noriko here.
>>284651570Diebuster just happened to release when making a series about the value of hard work was a lost art, it just apes Naruto's schtick of harping on about hard work and then revealing that the protag was actually born extremely powerful and can handle all problems effortlessly.
Is everyone here from the stream lol
>>284651763
>>284650044That is objectively correct, yes
>>284645591I like that it has a cute brown girl mc
>>284651570Gunbuster doesn't take itself seriously enough to be refuted about anything. It has a simple premise and spins its wheels a lot to stretch it out. Speaking as if it's some 2deep4u introspective is what makes you pretentious.
>>284650056>Of course Gunbuster is better. Diebuster has like one good episode. But since it happens to be the finale, that's all the mouthbreathers with their goldfish memory remember, and not the dumb episodes dedicated to side characters realizing they're irrelevant and going insane.
>>284645591Boobs and great animation
>>284652865>Gunbuster doesn't take itself seriously enough to be refuted about anything.Gunbuster takes itself quite seriously and the idea of giving something up to be able to push on a little more is present from the very beginning.
>>284653026It's a comedic parody through and through with robots doing jumping jacks and a petty love triangle. The only actual theme beneath the humor and melodrama is "HARD WORK AND GUTS!"
>>284652787I saw the intro before I watched Gunbuster and then Diebuster, and I thought Nono and Lal'c were in lesbains together.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nndqjPGjZGI
>>284653177I especially thought the part where Noriko gave up on her entire Military academy education to gather just a few more mementos of her father and find out more about his passing, that was a very comedic and lighthearted scene and definitely exemplified the central themes of "hard work" and "guts".Or that time Noriko tears her heart out in a desperate move to activate the universe destroying superweapon. I really liked how comedic and lighthearted her sacrifice was.
>>284653292>and melodrama
>>284653359I recommend that you don't use words you don't know.
>>284653429I recommend you learn what a theme is.
>>284653292>Or that time Noriko tears her heart out in a desperate move to activate the universe destroying superweaponThis is just a Getter Robo reference. It is included because it is cool and Getter Robo is the best manga of all time. The other Getter Robo references such as mecha pilots crossing their arms are also in for the same reason.>I especially thought the part where Noriko gave up on her entire Military academy education to gather just a few more mementos of her father and find out more about his passingBelieve it or not, now and then they do take time to develop characters even in shows that aren't meant to be taken too seriously.
>>284645591It brings back that classic retro design we’ve been sorely deprived of in the modern era.
>>284645817I fail to see what's disappointing about that.
>>284649561>KatDiebuster is good for pretty much the exact same reason Gravity Rush is. Main character hard carry.
>>284646850is it opposite day?
>>284649561>Letting other people decide your taste for youNo wonder the state of this board is where it is now
>>284645591Eh, its mediocre as a stand alone thing but i kinda fucking hate it as a Gunbuster sequel, a lot, and i say this as guy who thinks the latter is just alright with some really good things about it.
Significantly more time has passed between Gunbuster and Diebuster than between Diebuster and now.
>>284645591Only when youdon’t compare it to gunbuster.
>>284654724Funny how Gunbuster looks from a whole different era, while Diebuster easthetically isn't much different from modern anime, a little bit of early digital jank aside. We truly live in a stagnant culture.
I like a lot of old ovas that are plot last, visuals first and even I think Diebuster is completely vapid.I imagine the average anon quite younger than me would absolutely hate it since they're all perpetual serialization plotfags.
>>284654860The plot of Diebuster is full of twists and turns compared to the more straightforward Gunbuster so I don't understand that assessment.
>>284649561It's trash.
>>284649561I'd advise you to watch it anyway. It's six episodes, you could get through it in a single evening if you wanted. Is it good? Sort of. It's not anywhere near as memorable as Gunbuster overall, but it has some very pretty animation and some of the visuals will probably stick with you. In terms of plot it's got a strong build up but a weak conclusion, kind of the opposite of Gunbuster in some ways, I guess.I don't think it degrades the original but that's mostly because it barely touches on the actual characters, and despite calling back to Gunbuster extensively it doesn't feel like much of a continuation. But watching it won't ruin anything, it just won't add anything either. It's mostly worth watching for a better understanding of the course Gainax took and seeing some ideas and visual elements that they later revisited and expanded in, say, Gurren Lagann. And Nono is cute.
Despite someone always bringing it up Diebuster and TTGL really don't feel similar at all, Tsurumaki/Enokido and Imaishi/Nakashima have a completely different style, the former has a whimsical class to it, a certain theatrical melodrama (Ikuhara was even in charge of one episode) that's almost the anthitesis of the crass bluntness of the latter. Is it only for the mechs that get stupidly big and start tossing around planets? Because in Diebuster that's immediately subverted, the titular fuckhuge mech is utterly useless and quickly discarded, just like the idea of using Earth as a projectile.
>>284657634They're mecha anime made by the same studio back to back, comparisons are naturally going to sprout up.
>>284645591It's really mid, honestly. It has some good sakuga here and there, the general concept of humans becoming more like the space monsters is kind of neat, the callback to the original's ending at the end is kinda nice, but in general it's really boring. I don't really give a shit about Nono or the ugly brown forehead or anyone in the series, frankly.
>>284648158this
>>284646850Stupid, braindead tourist. Get the fuck out of our hobby.
>>284645591The "mechas" look too fleshy and dumb, Tsurumaki missed the mark with his style here.
fighting topless? you fiend
>what if rei and asuka had a daughter>>284648158/thread
>>284657978>Doesn't like NonoYeah, your taste is shit
I don't remember if I actually watched Diebuster in 2007 or not. I remember seeing a clip of the Double Inazuma Kick in 2008 or 2009 and not knowing what it was. But I definitely downloaded it via torrents. I remember the Diebuster being giant and Nono cutting the moon in half. Shit was weird. I just ended up rewatching it and GunBuster a few years ago
>>284657978>It's really mid, honestly. It has some good sakuga here and there, the general concept of humans becoming more like the space monsters is kind of neat, the callback to the original's ending at the end is kinda nice, but in general it's really boring.tru->I don't really give a shit about Nono
>>284659298>>284659918To be frank, your waifu is really boring. You can certainly do better. It's been years since I watched this garbage, though. Can you elaborate as to what Nono has going on, besides her perfectly adequate and fuckable character design, that makes you think she's worth a damn?
>>284660222NTA but she is plucky, tall, determined and slightly ditzy, Nono is far from a bad choice for a waifu.
>>284660222Worst trips I've ever seen
>>284645591I yearn for the days shows could look as good as this, maybe my favorite final episode ever
>>284652005but at what cost? the life you gave up
Ah ah ah ah
>>284645591I wish more anime had the entire solar system as a setting. It simultaneously feels epic and massive, yet at the same, comfy and close to home.
>>284662186>plucky, determined, ditzySo she does stupid shit while playing at being a hero, and only gets anywhere because she is actually Buster Machine #7. Got it.Also:>5'6''>tallManlets, when will they learn?
>>284649561>Ive heardstop being a sheep and form your own opinion by actually watching it.
>>284645591I watched it few months back and really liked it. They should make S3
>>284653289I genuinely dislike Yuri bait.
>>284664725>So she does stupid shit while playing at being a heroIsn't she great?
>>284665065how is it yuribait retard, one of the girls fucking dies
>>284658719its not tourism to have standards
>>284665107What does die buster have to do with my post?
>>284649756HOLY SHIT LMAO SAME IT JUST HAPPENED TO ME
Diebuster was ahead of its time, it's the perfect zoomer anime.
>>284645591Groovin Magic
>>284653289>were in lesbains togetherGod I hate yuritards. Who talks this way? I wish they would all die.
I always forget about the attempted rape scene
It feels less like Gainax made it and more like Trigger made it. Things are played very fast and loose, the harder scifi aspects are replaced with science fantasy, and there's goofy things like Nono worshiping Noriko (despite tens of thousands of years having passed since Noriko was last seen), and commanding an army with her ahoge.
>>284666845Gainax also made FLCL
>>284666901I'm aware. But calling Diebuster a sequel to Gunbuster is such a drastic tonal shift it's hard to take it seriously. In Gunbuster Pluto was a casualty of the sacrifice of the Excelion, and later Jupiter was sacrificed in the war too. These are irreplaceable elements of human history, immutable, almost divine entities. You feel every sacrifice. In Diebuster they attach thrusters to Earth and rocket it towards the space monster, and then giant Nono just wags her finger and goes>No no no! Bad Lal'C! We don't sacrifice the Earth here! And puts it back. It feels tone deaf.
>>284645591I cannot say... because I was bored to tears. I really dont know what people see in this and gunbuster. guess I am a mecha plebeian to some, even as a kid I fucking loved mazinger Z.
>>284645591The world is ready for Tribuster!
>>284667806Shit I don't even remember if I finished Diebuster is 2007. I didn't really like it back then
People talking about Gunbuster like it's a serious hard sci-fi drama, when it stars teenage girls in leotards doing push ups with their mechs and getting into corny love triangles before going full Getter Robo on space bugs while exposing their breasts always cracks me up. It's pastiche, you aren't meant to take it that seriously.
>>284668301I just don't think the half year gap between gunbuster and diebuster was good. I rewatched Diebuster like 16 years after finishing Gunbuster. Much better like this.
Who owns the series with Gainax gone?
>>284669070Most of them went to Khara and some to Trigger.
>>284669070Anno PROBABLY grabbed the rights. Assuming they weren't sold off for parts.
>>284645591It's just old. So it reminds you of better times.
>>284669159>>284669895I see
>>284669895It's also important to notice that Tsurumaki already made his Diebuster sequel.
>>284674491? Did he make a manga?
>>284674509it's GQuuuuuuX
>>284674651Cute.
>>284674491hopefully one day we'll get a proper part 3 to the flcl/top2 series.
Did they ever translate that manga set between Gunbuster and Diebuster?
