Every day until Christmas, I will dump a few oneshots from Garo Magazine.Join me as we explore the wonderful world of alternative manga from the 20th century.>what the hell is Garo?Garo was an influential manga magazine published monthly from 1964 to 2002.It was founded as a platform for avant-garde, experimental, and counterculture manga creators who were rejected by mainstream publishers, and was a starting point for many artists you've probably never heard of.Some of these stories are funny and whimsical, some of them shocking and thought-provoking, and some are incomprehensible pretentious nonsense. Try to keep an open mind, and feel free to discuss manga in general as well
Day 21.There are only three days left (I probably won't be posting on the 24th), so I'm changing the thread format a bit. Each day I'll focus on one of the most influential gekiga artist, a different one each day.Today we start with Sanpei Shirato, co-founder and early editor of Garo magazine. As an author he was a mainstay of the magazine for many years, but mainly for his long running series Kamui Den instead of oneshots like most other contributors.(the story I'm posting wasn't published in Garo as far as I know so I'm cheating a bit. Oh well). Dora, by Sanpei Shirato. From 1976.
This one is considerably longer than what I've posted this far, so bear with me if there are some delays.Previous thread: >>284598942
Fun fact I've learned recently: Goseki Kojima was Shirato's assistant for a while.
Can't say I'm a fan of the new captcha, atleast not for dumping.
>>284649197>>284649240Where is Swiper?
>>284649275Those early days of manga were super incestual. Everyone was someone else's assistant or they were assistants together or something like that.
I have to resize these spreads but you can look at the original size on mangadex, they're gorgeous if you have a big monitor.
IT WAS A DREAM ALL ALONGHOW UTTERLY UNPREDICTABLE!
>>284648988I’m lucky enough to have one of these in my possession.
And that's the End of the first story. Did you like it?My high-school teacher told me that Freud is a fraud, but I don't know anything about that.Next story after a break.
>>284650880Impeccable brushwork but classic psychoanalysis memes do nothing for me.
>>284650883What month / year is it ?
>>284650880Is that what it was about? I thought it was just an excuse to make a lot of drawings of a naked lady. I guess this artsy stuff just goes over my head.
>>284651360See the credits page, >>284650943 aparently it's inspired by a real patient case.>I thought it was just an excuse to make a lot of drawings of a naked ladyProbably true as well, I wouldn't read too much into it.But to be fair most of Shirato's stories are usually a lot more down to earth.
>>284649375I should have expected that she'd be naked by the 5th page. It is funny to see how the sex appeal standard has changed over time, looking back at old ecchi manga.
And now for a very different artstyle by the same author, Zashiki Warashi.
>>284649482Call of the wild.
>>284649857https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE0wfjsybIQ
>>284650043>little girlDude, have you seen her tits and ass?
>>284650188>>284650221Fucking ocean goblins making all that racket
>>284650310>>284650383I guess she does look physically younger now.
>>284652946>>284650487And now older again. I guess there's some metaphor about her age and her willpower?
>>284650880>>284650943Not bad, but I bet it was mostly an excuse to draw a naked woman in a bunch of different poses. Freud was a hack, he invented a whole genre of psychology to get around the issue that his women patients were all molested and he didn't want to believe that.
>>284650943Freud isn't taken seriously by mainstream modern psychiatry/psychology, but his ideas endure because they were embedded into a lot of novels and other literature of Freud's day.
>>284652717>>284652744The Naruto storytime wishes it could be this cool.
>>284651067I own issue No. 132 from October 1974, purchased on eBay a few years ago for approximately $20.
>>284653004The ninjas got OP
Sorry about that
>>284653505Ninja stories are Shirato's bread and butter, check out his other works if you like this story.
>>284653939That one isn't scanned on the internet archive. If you know moonrunes, you're probably the only anon on this site to have read the stories from that particular issue.
The End.
That's it for Sanpei Shirato. Tomorrow we'll be looking at Yoshiharu Tsuge
>>284649197I just realized that we're 2 days away from the end. I'm a little sad but also very much thankful for these threads. I was looking forward to them every day for the last month.
>>284655508Mighty fine ome. Thanks.
>>284655616Glad to hear you enjoyed it.I'll probably continue for a while in January. Not specifically garo stories, but longer dumps centered on specific authors like today. I'd really like to post more Tsurita Kuniko, and a few others. I won't have time to make dailies anymore, but it could be weekly gekiga sunday for example.
>>284655267Classic Shirato Sanpei set up.
>>284655508Thanks OPMuch comfier than Akame, I love all of this guy's works if I can find them. Savannah is another wacky and funny one.
>>284655097And now everyone draws girls like this
>>284655035How many secret ninja techniques are on this page?
>>284655085It's a nice little detail that the cleft lip girl is compared to a rabbit, just like Kosuke, though obviously for different reasons.>>284652696Also the food he brings old Gon is a pheasant.
>>284659779Forbidden technique: page 9 bump!
>>284655508Thank you for posting.
>>284655603>Yoshiharu TsugeHe aight. Too much of a druggy for me. I like his take on Musashi Miyamoto.
>>284661190Impressive.
>>284658597Evolution.
>>284656194just make sure to put that as a title so my filters can pick it up
>>284650383fool! those are sedimentary rocks!
>>284652744ah, feudal japan
>>284652744This feels like Under Ninja or rather most media doesn't portray ninjas as being this cutthroat and fickle. Which is a shame because I find this infinitely more interesting.
>>284655391This was cool as fuck
>>284650310This would do well as a double feature with Ningyo by Ayako Yamada
>>284655391Outskilled.
>>284649625>No way, fag.
>>284650769Majestic
>>284669779Most media don't go deep into ninja internal structure. Most of the times they are only appear as tools to their masters.
>>284669779Check out the manga Azumi.
>>284652970I love how they'll expand more personnel for those that flee than actual missions. Though to be fair the risk of loose lips it too scary to leave alone.
>>284669779it's the same with samurai. they started as fancy mercenaries after all.
>>284655267FEUDAL JAPAN!
>>284655508Thx mate.
Day 22.Today we look at Yoshiharu Tsuge.I find he has a fascinating biography, but for now just remember that he was a pretty depressend dude, and one of the first to use his personal life as inspiration when writing manga. He's gained fame for his surrealistic, "dreamy" stories. But I've selected some that are more grounded to show off his range, from wholesome boy meets girl to post-war depression.
Secondhand bookFrom 1966.
By the way these editions from D&Q are very nice if you want to read more Tsuge, but I don't like that they redraw all the soundeffects.
>>284673970Vlad Love is a pretty bad and unfunny anime. But it has one episode where Oshii spends the entire time fanboying over Tsuge and referencing probably about a dozen of his works.Maybe the one interesting episode of the whole mess. I prefer Tadao Tsuge, personally. But YT is still pretty good.
>>284674072>>284674058How much was 1000yen back then?
>>284674159>I prefer Tadao Tsuge, personally.Fun fact, Tadao wanted to be comic artist like his big brother, so he wrote a story ("Handcuffs") and showed it to him to see if it was good enough to be published. But Yoshiharu had a deadline coming up and a case of writers block, so he asked Tadao if he'd let him use the story for himself. So, the story Handcuffs by Yoshiharu is actually Tadao's debut work.
>>284674349Inflation calculator says that's 4500 yen today
The End, what a twist!A lot more to come, so stay tuned.
>>284674110Very smooth.
>>284674726~$45I guess that's a lot for a kid especially back then
>>284674130genuinely beautiful backgrounds >>284674159now I feel obliged to read all of Tsuge's (available) work before watching this show... >>284674530neat
>>284674842>now I feel obliged to read all of Tsuge's (available) work before watching this show...I actually dropped that show at that episode because I felt like I had to look up all the references first and forgot
>>284674425>>284674450>interfere in a guy trying to buy his thing back>get offended when he buys it backAm I missing something or is this kid just being a dickhead?
>>284674754That is a more positive end than I'm used to Tsuge manga having.
>>284674915He was disrespected in front of his girl. He had to stand up for himself.
>>284674754Wholesome twist and the previous owner was more of a bro than I'd expect
Wait a minute, so he ends up with the 1000 yen and the book?!
>>284674915He's just a kid, he was basically told to shut up and let the adults do their business. Wouldn't that make you mad as a kid?>>284675205And the girl. Assuming he mans up and talks to her.
An unusual painting. We're going back to feudal Japan.
The EndBut there's still more
>>284676954
The dog from Prayer pass.
>>284651909>But to be fair most of Shirato's stories are usually a lot more down to earth
The End.I've got one last story coming up.
>>284679406>I've got one last story coming up. really spoiling us today
>>284676565He later died of food poisoning.
>>284679105>are usually a lot more down to earthYou got me. Most of his NINJA stories are more down to earth.
>>284676686What a guy. That really is the best way to live as a samurai. Just petty chicanery.
>>284676892Hitler?
>>284676954Hitler is such a nice dude.
>>284679105Me and the boys.
Last one for today.Oba electroplating factory.>>284679610I may or may not be playing favorites with Tsuge.
>>284679271Dude was just chilling.
>>284679406It really is a doggy dog world out there.
>>284681013Cat fight
>>284648988
>>284681355and Miyoshi seemed like such a nice guy
And that's the End for today.Tomorrow is the last day! And we'll be joined by my very good friend Yoshihiro Tatsumi.
>>284679406this one might've been my favorite
>>284680982Poor bastard.
>>284681138She was pretty retarded for that.
>>284681228Brutal.
>>284681434Thanks OPGood choice of Tsuge manga if you're leading into Tatsumi. This is probably the most 'Tatsumi' of any of his works I've read.
>>284681434Arigato, OP.
>>284681062Making rice crackers sounds like a decent offer compared to the alternative.
>>284689269Probably gives you some kind of popcorn lung shit.
>>284689350Every now and then I'll run into someone who has spent most of his life working in some industrial job or another, and it really is disturbing how many of them developed lung issues.
>>284674110Removing the original hand drawn onomatopoeia is just as disgusting as flopped manga. Crime against art.
>>284689658It's easy to take it for granted.
>>284681285As expected.
