The entire fucking opening of BS1 is Dark Souls.
You are an Undead, called literally a "Hollow", and you are rotting in a jail cell awaiting for another knight (Joan of Arc in this case instead of Oscar in DS1) to free you. Your gimmick is that you are reborn (a.k.a respawn) each time you die, and that is something incorporated into the story (it's not just a gameplay mechanic). You use Souls to buy stuff and empower yourself, and use bonfires to go from place to place, rest, and recharge your flasks.
Several of the dungeons are allusions to Dark Souls, as well as a few NPCs and items.

It's a bog-standard rpg maker game (of the actual turn-based jrpg variety, not a walking simulator) and the pencil artystyle of all the porn doesn't make it any better. You can disable them, but they still happen off-screen.
It also comes with the jankiness usually associated with passion projects made by people that don't really know how to code, and just use custom scripts they found online for their games (which is 99% of rpg maker games).
What makes it 'good' is the fact it attempts to have the deep story of a visual novel with multiple paths, post-game routes, and all those tropes.
It gives it a charm that other rpg maker games don't really have, but it's still just an rpg maker game.
