It’s like the most creatively bankrupt way to wrap up a story. They just start throwing every single character into a giant clusterfuck of meaningless fights, most of whom haven’t been relevant for hundreds of chapters — and now suddenly we’re supposed to care because they got a half-assed power-up or a dramatic one-liner before getting one-shot.

And the worst part is, none of it actually matters. The side characters don’t do anything. They’re just there to stall or get beaten so the MC can show up and save the day. It’s all fake tension. Nothing has weight anymore. There’s no strategy, no real emotional payoff, just endless fights with increasingly ridiculous stakes and a million flashbacks to characters who were barely even developed.

It's like the author realizes the story is ending and suddenly feels the need to give everyone their "moment" — even if it completely derails the pacing and kills any narrative momentum. At some point it stops being a story and becomes a checklist.

Meanwhile, the main villain turns into some godlike monster with five forms and a tragic backstory we only hear about five minutes before he dies. The war drags on for 50+ chapters, and by the end you don’t even care who wins anymore.

There are a few series that pull it off, sure, but most of the time it's just lazy writing dressed up with flashy panels and fake hype.

I mean that depends on how you define "Don't do anything".

Lets use the 3 in OP's example just for shits and giggles. Top one, lets grab a random side character from Bleach, Zaraki. Does he do something in the final war? Yes. Has he been relevant for like 100 chapters? Not really, he dropped off the fucking map and offscreened a guy like 200 chapters prior. So does that mean it didn't matter? Well, not to the character, because he resolves the character trait and solves a mystery that's been around since his introduction. To THE CHARACTER, it's a big important thing that has fuck all to do with the MC. So, does it matter? If his own resolution of a character arc doesn't matter, why would any other one even from Ichigo?

Lets take One Piece, then. We aren't at the war yet, but one of the most important parts of the narrative is that the WORLD matters. It's big, it's full of crazy ass characters, and they all have something to prove. Will Vivi's participation matter? She's not going to take down Imu, but her father was murdered, her homeland taken over, doesn't it matter to her and to the story?

Finally, just to grab one from the bottom, Todoroki. Dabi has absolutely fuckall to do with Deku, period. I don't think they talked for more than a couple panels if that. But doesn't his family story that's been around since his introduction matter to him, as a character? If not, well, what the fuck could possibly make it matter to you? This is the problem saying vague shit like that, "It doesn't matter!" To who? And does anything in your eyes outside of the MC and Big Bad? If not, what the actual fuck are you doing reading shonen. Goku got put in the hospital back to back in Frieza, this isn't new.

What the fuck does this even mean? It's such a vague nothing statement that it becomes meaningless noise. Kenpachi's fights mattered to his narrative, stopping the rest of the league of villains helped Deku win the fight, One Piece is literally just a collection of people who have their own hopes and dreams out to fulfill them completely without Luffy's say in it. What exactly does it have to "Accomplish" in the narrative? What specific thing was Upper Moon 2 or 1 missing just because they weren't the specific big bad killing people?

Dabi is a weird pick for the Deku one precisely because the finale of the Todoroki storyline is completely removed from the "war" happening in the city. It's not even part of it.
You should take everyone else there then, for example, who actually are thrown into the war plot. Almost all of the classmates like Momo and Mina and Animal guy and Diabetes guy, they do not matter at all. They get to flash onto panel 1 panel each at the end, with zero narrative weight. Even Mirio gets shafted, he's only around to flash his bum at Shiggy until le Deku can arrive and onepunch him with his shitty OFA quirk like always.
OP is 100% right that mha just used the "war" crap to have each character flash onscreen for 1 second each, say a witty one-liner like iida's shit about "maybe having a sad backstory is a bad thing huuuuuh?", then disappear so the author can pretend he used the entire cast well while just defaulting to the same lazy shit as always.
