Why is that despite most shonen manga/anime being mildly homophobic and treating every female character like shit, they still attract large female audiences?

The homophobia should scare away the fujos, and the mishandling (either constant humiliation, competent but never allowed to actually accomplish anything, or lacking screentime. The last one is admittedly more of a side character thing than a gender thing, but the gender ratio means there's enough good male characters to make up for the bad ones, while the same can't be said for the female ones) of the female characters should scare away the rest, but it doesn't.

Probably some other stuff but I could see them having a stronger preference for it.
It could also just be that Kamen Rider has a more dominant appeal to the male demo since it isn't saying that Sentai is more popular with women, just the ratio of male to female fans.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn exemplifies this. It was massively popular with female audiences and is the quintessential battle shounen that was carried by fujos. The protagonist's girls mainly just do domestic work to support the male characters and occasionally be damsels in distress so they can get saved. In an infamous scene, they once apologized for leaving the kitchen. The only female guardian, Chrome Dokuro, is a delicate, pretty little thing who can't even be called a jobber because that implies other characters will look strong if they defeat her. She's more a damsel in distress who gets protected by her beloved Mukuro.
