The opponent acted like they were gracious for Kogan's consideration and wanted to return the favor, "yo bro let's do this, you help me I help you", and then he did the incredibly petty thing. Kogan is what happens when someone who is 99.99% a psychopath does something resembling an altruistic gesture and gets punished for life. He only had a butterfly's worth of humanity and it was crushed with a sledgehammer.

These super strong swordmen do not go on wacky adventures roaming the country defeating bad guys, making colorful new friends, living free under the sky thanks to their bravery, and being rewarded with good reputation for their strength and honor. No, Shigurui greets you with a far more realistic uncomfortable truth. Warriors are enslaved by the system, they are commanded like robots, their individually is stripped, they kill their emotions in order to be of use to other people and these people do not even respect them. In this world you either lick the foot on your face, or you gets tortured/disfigured/humiliated, and once you get tired of this dance you just fucking kill yourself. There is a certain beauty to the misery porn but it just isn't easy to digest.

Seigen's confict with Fujiki isn't driven by them being mewling victims of feudalism. Its driven by their homoerotic obsession with each other - Seigen face-fucks a woman and makes her orgasm out of a mix of arousal, fear, and sheer impact of his presence as he thinks about how much he hates Fujiki over his belief he deeply embarrassed himself in front of Fujiki years ago.Mie's conflict isn't as a pure victimized maiden who is abused by the demands of feudal society. Instead she's a fairly deranged woman who has a complex mixture of masochistic desires, a hatred for the men she needs to rely on, a desire for a man who represents all that she could never have, and a personal obsession with honor in her own right. Shigurui turns people off because its intentionally grotesque and highlights things purely to elicit disgust with the world and characters.

Guts was actually happy at several points in his life, he smiled, laughed, even found love, and was respected by many. He survived his harsh life. Fujiki fucking killed himself from despair and humiliation. I just wanted to point out that this is a somewhat heavy subject to digest, that's all.
