>>284709657Being a mecha show that wasn't depressing soap opera stuff was actually pretty rare at the time. Patlabor was big because it said that actually it could be pretty fun to be a mecha pilot and it double dipped on the police procedural format that is always a big hit.

The first 2 episodes were decent, 3rd one was dogshit (I got that it was a godzilla parody as I've seen the OG godzilla but it didn't do anything interesting with it), 4th was fine, 5 and 6 was good but opened up a huge can of worms for the world that this OVA wasn't interested in exploring. Then 7 feels really weird as it ignores the huge events in 5-6, but if I take this as just taking place beforehand then it's an OK episode but I thought it was very weird how the truck driver's identity is hidden for the first half and then suddenly at the end he's apparently a hero?Really felt like they just decided to copy a bunch of different movies they liked rather than having a vision for it. It's at it's best when it's just anime Police Academy, the mechs themselves get surprisingly little screentime.I've heard movie 2 is great which is honestly the only reason I gave this series a chance.
