Was it really the right path for Araki to abandon the Hokuto no Ken-influenced art style and pursue his own “originality”?To be honest, the kind of “originality” that became especially prominent around Part 5 feels genuinely unsettling to look at.This isn’t the usual “it got too gay” criticism.I think the biggest problem is the characters’ eyes. The eyes in his more recent work all look like doll eyes—creepy and uncanny.

I think it’s simply an age-related issue. If you compare them side by side, it’s obvious that the level of detail in Parts 1 and 3 is completely different from that of Part 6.If my math is right, Araki was in his early thirties during Part 3, and realistically speaking, that was probably the last age range where he could go all out and draw manga with that level of fine detail at full power.
>>284714051I prefer the look of his older work, that being said it's hard to say if his current work would look any good at all if he'd tried to maintain the old style. It still sets a good precedent for an artist to have mainstream success with and be celebrated for a highly unique artstyle, even if I don't vibe with it.
