Early knightmare development and the start of "dueling" culture among the elite pilots would be a sidestory that emphasizes Marianne's role as the ultimate proof that savagery is the only way to climb the ranks in the empire, even allowing a monstrous enough commoner to ascend to the heights of power.

The marriages would also be a sort of "power level" gauge for his rise to seize the throne and any one of them provides the opportunity for an intrigue subplot as he works to secure whatever family's support or undermines a rival faction and steals a daughter from them.
