Feels like most of the idea of Shinji being bitchmade solely comes from EoE, and honestly to some degree it feels a bit detached from the rest of the story. I think I'm becoming contrarian enough to say that the TV ending was actually a bit better for the actual writing and such, as it was much more focused in on how killing Kaworu fucked with Shinji's feelings about his place in and effect on the world, whereas in EoE it is touched on but otherwise he is literally just being pulled along for most of it.
