Shit goes absolutely nowhere half the time, some fights are way too long, the setup gets completely forgotten to the point where it feels unnecessary (Rudo could've been born on the surface with a typical shonen dream of reaching the sky city, and absolutely nothing would've changed), some fights are too long, some feel unnecessary, and the mystery is so thinly spread that you stop caring about it.

Worldbuilding I think is fine but nothing spectacular. It's been building up a lot of mysteries that it does need to cash in at some point.

With Rudo's upbringing, it makes sense that he is the way that he is, and a major part of the story is about him growing from that dark place he was at. Unless you count the obvious gag 'fight' against Rudo, or his backstory for some reason, Zanka has only lost twice at that point, and both times to Jabber. There's clearly a point to Zanka losing. It's there to serve his character, not just something decided on for the sake of power scaling or whatever.I feel like complaining that a character loses a lot and that it's 'too late' to grow is a very 'modern anime' take in general.

Rudo is extremely emotional and basically ignores most of what Zodyl says because Zodyl makes no attempt to compromise or meet Rudo on his level. It's another way to show how different they are.Even with that, I actually agree. Zodyl's introduction didn't really sell me on him as like, THE primary bad guy. I think the anime improved him a little just being able to hear a voice, but overall even with future encounters in the manga, Zodyl hasn't really impressed me as a villain, and I think villains in general aren't really a highlight for this series.
