I think it's both. Like they became one, but then the Ryota part possessed this first child. And Chika possessed the second child later.

How will the ritual work now? Modern Ryota was "born" before Chi, but the original Chi was possessed before him. But he wasn't the first possession even then.

Maybe? It seems like there's some intentional ambiguity going on. Like before when Ryota was recalling Chi being in the womb with him as a tentacle blob, was that baby even Ryota? Or was he actually remembering himself as a blob? At the very least, Ryota had to be (re)born first.
I think we also now know why Shirono was obsessed with Ryota and possibly why she and Chi seem to be competing over him. They both want to "reunite" with him since they're all parts of the same monster.
