Gosho's artstyle hasn't gone to shit yet, but it seems to be around this point in the manga that Conan's trademark smirk starts curving consistently. Yup, the seeds have been sown and he's easing us into the terrible that's to come… this is the point of no return if you ask me.

>>284784472The reason why Vermouth so boldly disguised herself as Araide was cause FBI tricked her into thinking Araide and his family were killed in car accident, so as far as BO is concerned they are dead and buried (and Vermouth isn't going to share the full story how she failed). And apparently they don't have any spies in school or medical circles to notice him being back on the job.For a major criminal organization, they are actually quite badly informed of things happening out there.

The New York case hinted she feels despair and guilt, and this case makes it ambiguous whether the kind personality she showed during her time as Araide was an act or genuine. I think if she really was rotten to the core like Jodie believes she wouldn't have been able to gain Kuroba's and Yukiko's friendship in the past. I doubt her actions will be retconned like >>284779988 says, but she's being set up for a moment where she sacrifices herself to save Shinichi and/or Ran for sure.
