You can down the whole party if they aren't in an urban environment that way. And that is before we talk man-portable artillery and rockets. That is a literal EXPLOSION spell that can be spammed.

So even if someone invents a basic ass black powder blunder bus, a mage is gonna be FAR better on all levels than some scattershot firearm. Which takes a minute to reload, IF you have ammo. Mage doesn't need ammo, can speed load via mana potions, and can fire a lot faster for more damage. Guns just can't compete. You really need to be a FPS gamer mage with access to the full weapon tech tree AND mag duping to be functionally equivalent to a 1st class mage. AND those fucking mages can fly!
