If you actually read shoujo, the common way to stretch the story is to introduce a female rival to the heroine and shoujo hijinks happen until the heroine wins. Rinse and repeat until the sales start to decline. The heroine always keep her reliable nice guy around

That's stupid. If the main couple has good chemistry then use it.
That said, the biggest problem with this pairing is that Asuna stops being cool and strong after Aincrad. She becomes a lame support-bot and we lose the power couple. I hate it.
