The difficulty in writing male leads is that you have to strike a balance to avoid alienating half of your potential fanbase. A lot of people would refuse to engage with the story if the male lead was forward and bold and generally red-blooded, because they'd be totally unable to relate to that due to being shy and timid in their teen years. Likewise, if you write your male lead to be hopelessly awkward and unable to talk normally to girls, you'll alienate people who can't relate to being such a loser. Really, you should understand male leads in this genre to be self-inserts in bad disguises. They aren't generally compelling or fleshed-out characters in their own right - the rom-com you like best will usually be the one where the protagonist is most similar to yourself as a young man.You can't make them too red-blooded or too submissive, you have to find a middle ground that everyone can relate to
