And I was doing this in peak Cherry Blossom season and never had a problem, so it's never an issue. There's really no reason to pay extra, it's all fast enough.

It's extremely convenient and basically required if you use the Green cars, though I'm also used to the pre-Covid system where you needed to carry that bulky passport-shaped pass and show it to every station attendant when passing through the gates.

There's a huge premium, but I'll gladly pay it if it means I don't have to listen to mainland Chinese tourists shouting across the aisle and taking up all the overhead compartments. This is especially true on the Tokaido Shinkansen line that runs along Tokyo and Osaka where I'll ride the Green car even without a JR Pass.
