In NGE they don't typically have the luxury of time once the fight actually starts, so in that sense it's more practical to be able to swap out and reload as quickly as possible.As far as integrated weapons, Evas are biological in nature so that's not as easy to install as it sounds, but off the top of my head most Gundams have vulcans integrated into the head, chest, or forearms for auxiliary use.
