That's really the selling point for the show. Also, in spite of looking like a mindfuck, eventually (almost) everything is explained if you watch through Kai and up to Rei.The anime does cut a lot of characterization, world building, plot points and even the freaking climax of an arc from the VN, which is why you see VN readers snubbing it. Tatari is the best psychological thriller and has some of the most harrowing moments in anything I’ve seen. Himatsu sucks and Akasaka is the weakest link in the whole story. Thankfully based Ooishi was there to make things tolerable. Meakashi, I agree, is the best chapter in terms of how polished the storytelling is. I think it helped a lot that R07 could go all out focused on a single character. It’s hard not to love Shion after reading it. Tsumi is of course beloved for a reason and its climax is one of the best things ever. Mina I think is beautiful. Rika finally assuming the role of the protagonist and Hanyuu entering the cast properly was great and seeing everyone work together to help Satoko was amazing and touching. Matsuri is Matsuri.

Now here comes the real horror, It's already been over a year by the end of the main story since he's been under, it could take even longer for a cure to be developed so it could take MULTIPLE years until he's able to return to daily life. So when he finally does get cured and can re-enter society all of his friends and peers will be grades above him, his body will have aged at the same rate as his friends but his mind will still be that of a lonely abused 13 year old with the only person in his life being his 10 year old little sister. So imagine his reaction when he finally gets to meet all of his friends and his little sister only to see that they "replaced" him with a city boy who's more outgoing, charming, and lively than him. It'd be one thing for Rena, Mion, or Rika to forget about him and move on but seeing this imposter get called "Nii-Nii" by Satoko living the life that SHOULD have been his there isn't any doubt that he would absolutely despise Keiichi initially.Keiichi and Satoko on the other hand would immediately cease hanging out with each other, Satoko feeling an intense amount of guilt for even daring to be happy while Satoshi was gone and "trying to replace him" would tell Keiichi she can't come over to cook for him anymore, that she can no longer call him "Nii-Nii". I just finished Tatarigoroshi and it was really a ride. The daily life was a fine comedy as always and Keiichi having sibling-like dinners with Satoko was very comfy. The entire part about killing Teppei, from the planning to action and getting rid of evidence had me feeling like Keiichi. I often found myself acting out the scenes and felt close to the emotions he felt as I imagined myself in his place.The part after that was even a bigger mindfuck than Watanagashi. I already watched the anime before so I knew the reason behind what happened, but from an objective perspective the entire thing feels like a good portrayal of a person going insane. You can feel Keiichi's inner world falling apart as things stop making sense, how everyone starts treating him like a lunatic and how he desperately tries to make them understand his reality.The finale doesn't make you rest with Irie dying, Rika having a gruesome death at the shrine, Satoko throwing Keiichi off the bridge and the whole thing with the entire village dying in the gas.Imagining the scene where Keiichi finally realizes that all the bags on the school grounds had corpses in them and that he very well might have seen Mion, Rena and Satoko among the bodies was brutal.I am really mad that I didn't read the VN first as it would have made the experience all the better, but the atmosphere didn't disappoint and I often felt excited about what would happen next as I didn't know the details.Anyway I am gonna go a continue with the other chapters. It's a good thing that I mostly forgot about what happens in Kai so I hope it's gonna be somewhat like experiencing the story for the first time.
