I swear CLAMP were gonna make Watanuki and Doumeki gay but this was published in a very straight magazine (Young magazine), they had to tone down the homolust because no editor would allow it.The ending of this series was super gay even though they stay straight.

The very moment Tsubasa entered the final stage old hags just ENDED all the development that was going on in Holic (Watanuki trying to make moves on Himawari and actually force her to meet him and Doumeki instead of avoiding them because of her anti-luck aura? Kohane actually fixing her life at slow but steady pace, even trying to fix her relationship with her mother and get her happy as well? Doumeki finally entering the shop and doing more stuff with Yuuko, basically becoming her second assistant? FUCK THAT, TSUBASA IS ENDING, SO WE'RE WRAPPING UP - Yuuko is dead, Himawari is a telephone now and later on cuckshit, Kohane is now Doumeki's appendix and Doumeki is stuck with useless egg for several generations.)Rei is just a pointless blueballing right now because of entire last chapter - who cares what happened between second (10 years) and third (at least 100 years) timeskips? Manga entered the stasis after Yuuko's death and half of cast was thrown away while nothing of importance was happening until last 10 chapters or so. Probably because CLAMP never bothered to plan Holic that far beyond its role as addendum to Tsubasa, so Rei ended up being 10+ years of filler and blueballing.

The latter one makes sense because the reason Doumeki (and his entire bloodline) aren't using the egg is because they're waiting for the moment when Watanuki finally gives up on waiting for Yuuko - egg would work as a convenient permanent painkiller for his mind. But until he keeps waiting they can't use the egg.Maybe it's the metaphor for readers and the manga - while people are willing to wait for Yuuko's return after 20+ years the manga will keep on going with no goal in sight, but if they stop waiting there's always an easy solution to just end the manga.
