Indeed. The only ones who seemed to actually like that ""trope"" were the producers of those anime (originals and adaptations) and Light Novel editors. I can only imagine that they kept doing that because their "feature feedback" had been done in a dumb way, e.g. asking a test audience "do you like this or not?" which obviously got answered with yes, because nips can't ever say no. Should have used A/B-testing or something along those lines instead. Or maybe they didn't asked for any "feature feedback" at all.
Either way they never seemed to realize that people watched these anime not because of such features but rather DESPITE them. Other than the slapstick comedy there are also the other similarly retarded ""tropes"" such as fake harem, stretching endless "will they or won't they"-type of """romance""" for hundreds of manga chapters or tens of LN volumes/anime episodes and once it's resolved the LN/manga/anime just ends because the audience wouldn't be able to handle sweet sugar romance of a couple that is actually in a relationship. Except for VN adaptations like Clannad, but that just didn't count to them for some reason. Also no sex. Ever. Because the main fanbase of ultra-purity otaku would never forgive them for being cucked by the story's MC, obviously.

Until isekai came along and had proven it all wrong. Producers and editors got mad as hell for being publicly proven wrong and thereby humiliated like that. Shueisha just closed the door to anything with a WN-aggregator origin altogether (to the satisfaction of some rival publishers) and a smear campaign against isekai that aimed to revision isekai history was launched to create the impression that all isekai are "the same" to hide the fact that isekai started off as a kind of counter-culture against all the pro-status-quo morality-police with eternal underdog MC media releasing at the time. Yup, anything like those "cuck shounen MC" collages. Isekai always was meant to be counter to that.
