Why does historical manga struggle to find a western audience?
>>284863963idk Vinland Saga is pretty popular in the west
>>284863963>2 votes
>>284863963Keiji is a giant Gary Stu, that isn't a flaw given what the series is like, but it's also something modern fans don't like.
anon... Amazon reviews? really?
>>284863963This seems like more a case of an old manga that doesn't already have a built-in fan base from illegal scanlations getting pretty much ignored.
Maybe the series is just bad. Did you think of that?
>>284863963Because people who like history prefer books and japanese historical manga is pure glorious japan wankery.
Western fans want cowboys and Indians, Samurai and Ainu don't interest them as much even if they include similar themes about outlaws and the frontier.
>>284864844>Maybe the series is just bad. Did you think of that?LOL Keiji is great
>>284864844I liked the first volume well enough, and most of the reviews on Goodreads are somewhere in the middle on it.
>>284865142You have to lure them in with Seven Samurai or Yojimbo first.
>>284863963Publishers and manga readerbase being terrible. The whole culture around it is terrible. The few people that actually bother with stuff like this often have no appreciation for it anyway.
>>284865142Everyone loves the sengoku
>>284863963In your example, it's probably the artstyle. >>284863996So is Orb. And Golden Kamuy. And Sengoku Basara.
Speaking of historical manga, why is the translation so slow?
>>284867038To give you time to learn Japanese.
>>284867142Not that I will be able to buy any manga digitally from outside of Japan.
>>284867186You absolutely can. Why do you claim otherwise?https://bookwalker.jp/series/4446/list/
What historical stuff are you currently reading?
>>284867186You can. Though various sites seem to keep trying to plug up any holes that allow it. I've been able to buy shit from Kobo as recently as last month.
>>284867229Because many sites (like Amazon JP) have started to block access to foreigners when it comes to digital goods. Have you even bought anything from Bookwalker JP in the last year?
>>284867245Oh thanks! Is it possible to rip books you buy from Japanese Kobo? I've only ever ripped from Amazon. They have shat up the process AGAIN this year and it's much more complicated than before.
>>284867283I did in fact buy something there just now.
>>284867319Japanese Kobo is the same as international Kobo and can be ripped exactly the same way.
>>284867319Yeah, I switched to Kobo after having some issues with Amazon. I was still able to remove the DRM from its stuff but it was getting more and more of a hassle. So far Kobo is much easier to do that with. But I saw an announcement on their site recently saying people from outside Japan wouldn't be able to use the Japanese site anymore. I don't know if it'll be easy to get around that the next time I try to use it.
>>284867376>But I saw an announcement on their site recently saying people from outside Japan wouldn't be able to use the Japanese site anymore.Well fuck.
>>284863963Westerners are obsessed with historic truth. Vinland saga took off because it posed as a realistic down to earth Viking story before going totally off the rails. Most historic manga can’t handle keeping it realistic without devolving into court theater antics.
>>284863963I think the problem with Hana no Keiji is that the real life history aspects are too dry for a modern western audience. People are intimidated by all the names of people and locations and dates. The final volume of Hana no Keiji comes off more like a history textbook than a comic, at times. It'll be interesting to see how people react to the final volume if the official English release doesn't get cancelled.
>>284867244Not directly reading but I'm waiting for the volume release of Battaglia di Anghiari.
>>284867283VPN aren't hard to use and get around all blocks except Line Manga.
>>284867500>Most historic manga can’t handle keeping it realistic without devolving into court theater antics. And this is what makes it popular. The more shounen-like it is, the bigger its audience.
>>284867244Contemplating whether to continue with Vlad Draculea or not.
>>284867376>But I saw an announcement on their site recently saying people from outside Japan wouldn't be able to use the Japanese site anymore. I don't know if it'll be easy to get around that the next time I try to use it.I've never bought anything from Kobo, but from what I understand everything is already region locked to begin with. People have been having to use VPNs, fake addresses, and gift cards/PayPal to get around it for a while.
>>284867501This is too text-heavy for present day. >>284867551>no scans>the author doesn't even have a page on MangaUpdates>https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/qujfqp8/anghiari-no-tatakaiDoomed.
>>284867704I've been using a fake address, yes, but the one time I used a VPN, shortly after the VPN stopped offering its free version.
>>284867733>This is too text-heavy for present day.HXH is popular though
>>284867577You can't circumvent shit with a VPN - you need a Japanese address/credit card.
>>284867704No, neither books.rakuten.co.jp/e-book nor kobo.com/jp/ja ask for an address or limit you to Japanese IPs.Gift cards and Paypal are just a way of paying for the latter.
>>284867771Where? Works fine for me.
>>284867774kobo.com/jp/ja is the one giving me the message saying American's won't be able to buy shit from it. Have you bought anything from it recently? >日本のストアは日本在住者向けストアのためアメリカ合衆国からはご利用になれません。アメリカ合衆国のストアをご利用ください。I don't know if this is just a warning message that doesn't do anything or what though.
Everybody please read this manga:>https://www.mangaupdates.com/series/bby2mvd/ryuu-ronIt's truly fantastic. Even though it's starts just like another dumb battle shounen, it's not really about martial arts. It's currently getting translated, with frequent releases. >>284867765It's a meme manga at this point, plus it has anime adaptations.
>>284867283>Have you even bought anything from Bookwalker JP in the last year?I have every month the series I'm looking forward to has a new release. It's always werked.
>>284867848I think it's just a warning. Haven't had any problems purchasing myself.
>>284863963A lot of historicals are just bad and that's a fact, however unfortunate. It's one of those easy settings people reach for when they have no ideas "Okay, I want to do manga but have NO idea what to do and don't like drawing kawaii girls so no schools and no isekai... history it is!"Western or eastern, it doesn't matter. Manga Three Kingdoms is just as unpopular as Manga Hussite Wars.Ditto the other way around. People like Kingdom and they also liked Vinland.
>>284867733Doomed in what way? It's a series that concluded in a single volume. I read it when it ran in Beam.Mangaupdates is hardly an indicator for anything. The author is fairly new and now has a longer series running in Beam that gets the first two volumes released on the 9th as well.https://x.com/umashi_mura
Which Japanese sites make it impossible to rip books? I want to know what to avoid.
>>284868325You can easily rip epub from Kobo and DMM.DLsite has a number of DRM free pdf releases. No site is going to make it absolutely impossible since screencapping is unavoidable on a web viewer.
>>284867551>homobait
>>284868324>Doomed in what way?Never getting scanlated, never being officially released in English. >Mangaupdates is hardly an indicator for anything. It's much more comprehensive than MAL and Mangadex. If a manga has a shabby, low-info page on MangaUpdates it's an indicator that it doesn't exist in the eyes of the English-speaking audience. >>284868301>It's one of those easy settings people reach for when they have no ideas>so no schools and no isekaiDoubt. There is too much research to be done and too much drawing of old architecture/clothing for mangaka with no clue what to dip into next to bother.
>>284868400Thanks! >DLsite has a number of DRM free pdf releasesFor the ones that can't be downloaded as pdfs, is there a way to rip them?>>284868450>samurai DID WHATOh poor anon.
>>284868325I would avoid using Amazon. It's probably not impossible but every once in a while they update their stuff to make it harder to rip and at the very least you need to want for someone to figure out how to circumvent it. The last time they updated you needed to make sure you didn't use the newest version of their software to be able to rip. I also think Amazon for some things has lower quality versions of digital manga. I wish these sites would tell you the resolution of the images. At most they give you the filesize, which is meaningless.
>>284868568Yep, I had had much trouble with Amazon this year until I looked up on plebbit how to do it properly: https://www.reddit.com/r/Calibre/comments/1c2ryfz/comment/naivj0j
>manga about recent-ish Japanese politics>dropped by the scanlator>or never picked up in the first placeEvery time. The Legend of Koizumi only got translated because of its sheer meme power.
How does he do it? His settings are always so vivid.
>>284867611This is just gay porn in disguise
>>284869176/a/ loves bears.
What's with the storytime threads these days? It's all popular stuff everybody is familiar with. Like, what's the point of discussing Ranma, Jojo, CLAMP manga, Gunsmith Cats, best-selling shounen X with an anime adaptation etc. in storytime threads where you can do it anywhere else, on any site, because these titles have such huge followings?
My guess is that most historical manga covers Japanese, East Asian, or Central Asian history, and western audiences dont know or care enough about that section of history. With that said I want a Shut Hell Anime
>>284868546>For the ones that can't be downloaded as pdfs, is there a way to rip them? Some doujin are downloadable as zips with jpg. With the DRM content it depends, the newer dlst files can be ripped, though they often have worse quality than other stores. The old cpd are unbroken as far as I know.
>>284869873>the newer dlst files can be rippedIs there a guide?
>>284869455Lowest common denominator for plebs.People with taste aren't going to lower themselves to read via imageboard threads instead of buying the volumes.
>>284869929Same way as DMM, you place a special dll file in the install directory of the read and when you open a file the deciphered content is dumped in the file's directory. It's mainly cumbersome because DLsite doesn't have a convenient combo for viewing and downloading. You have to download the zipped dlst from the web store or suffer through using DLsite Nest.
>>284863963The west hates history because we're stupid.
>>284868994Are you reading his new Humanzee series?
Are you reading the latest Tagame manga? >>284869978>Lowest common denominator for plebsThey already read those titles on other sites.
>>284868472>Never getting scanlated,>never being officially released in English.>doesn't exist in the eyes of the English-speaking audience. No problems here.
>>284863963if Normies get mad when they see things like senpai untranslated how are you going to expect them to watch something full of historical stuff they have to learn.

>>284870670>stop talking about manga

>>284868681This isn't going to help with the update after this though. Some manga will be unripable and no one has an updated fix for it. Some newer ones will not have ddrm by default but just assume anything after 2024 release will not be ripablet. Ripped over 1k

It debuted on October 29, 1997[1] on France 3 and within the same time in Italy on Rai 1, and later premiered in Canada on Radio-Canada on September 5, 1998. A co-production between Saban International Paris, Animation Ciné-Groupe J.P. Inc., ARD Degeto, France 3 and RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, the series is loosely based on the life of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth, nicknamed "Sissi".>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Sissi

>>284870745There's an 11 volume Hana to Yume series by Katou Tomoko about crown prince Rudolf from the 90s. Might be a bit hard to get your hands on.
>>284871734A couple of chapters are available on Mangadex, but it seems to be dropped.
What did you think of it?
>>284871609>>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_SissiNo I never even heard of that. We just watched the 1950s movies every christmas.
There's a manga from the 90s called Happy Tiger about a tank squad in WWII that was on a poster in one scene of Girls und Panzer. It was free on Amazon at one point so I downloaded it but haven't read it yet. It's only one volume, and I don't believe it has any translations.
>>284872324Happy Tiger doesn't seem to be on Mangaupdates for some reason but he seems to have quite a few manga about similar topics. He even apparently contributed to a GuP anthology at one point, which is pretty funny.
