>>284976664No, sweets are definitely on a different level in japan. There are cake shops, crepes, ice cream, etc, but people general don't eat cakes or candies or chocolates or pastries to anywhere near the same daily degree as in the US, and men much less so than women. Many people I know never opt for them at all. In fact the adjective "amai" for sweet often carries a negative connotation with it. If you're actually eating sweets, it can be a compliment, but if you're say eating curry or whatever and it's "amai" that is usually said with some distaste and can mean they sweetened it TOO much. Japanese candy in general, too, is way less sweet than western snacks. Flavorful things like anko (red beans) and matcha (green tea powder) make up a lot of traditional japanese confections, hyper-sweet syrupy fruity things are much less common. There are gummies and hard candies, but they're also often not designed for a single person to eat a large quantity at once, hence wrapping each candy individually inside the bag.
