Every time I've watched Angel's Egg, it's been while drunk late at night when I want to just soak in the atmosphere. Who the characters are, what the egg is supposed to contain, what the fossils signify, what the ending implies with the iconography of Noah's Ark, what the rules of this abstract world are; these are all things to chew on afterwards, to generate intrigue and discussion, not the point of the film itself. The point was simply to make something beautiful. The film isn't pretentious because it never tries to juggle intellectual ideas beyond the grasp of the writer; the pretentious thing would be to watch a film like this and scour every frame for hidden meaning that isn't there and claim to have "gotten it" when in reality not even the people who created could give you a concrete answer.
