Just as the Imagawa took kid Ieyasu hostage to ensure his clan would remain loyal, Takauji could have taken one or more of Tokiyuki's wives and sons hostage. It would not only end the hostilities between their two clans but would also bring them closer together since the Hojo child(ren) would be raised by the Ashikaga. If it weren't for the constraints of history, this would actually be the most sensible move for both Takauji and Tokiyuki. The real life Takauji likely did not consider the real life Tokiyuki worthy of that consideration.
