Alright, it is Sunday and I am gonna post the fourteenth volume of MAO. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to MAO after the dump. In addition, as MAO is atypically plot-heavy as a Rumiko Takahashi manga, please be mindful of others and use spoilers tags when discussing things that are revealed later in chapters that have not been dumped.

MAO is Rumiko Takahashi's current ongoing series, a dark fantasy manga with a more serious tone than most of her other major series. I highly recommend it, as there genuinely is a lot of intrigue.

Previous thread: >>284843892

I will be using the official localization of the manga volumes by VIZ (despite my issues with it). Keep in mind that the nature of the writing in MAO and this localization in particular has resulted in some mistranslated lines. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping a one-shot story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theater series that came out around this time. Today, that will be "Dedicated to S". The scans I have of the one-shot are translated by a generous anon on this board.

I have two notes from Furinkan here:

"Initially thought to be an ayakashi, the water creature is later identified as a tatarigami (祟り神/cursed god) by Mao. A tatarigami is a formerly benevolent spirit/god that has fallen or been corrupted. Mao explains that the god was corrupted when the well was filled in using unsanctified earth."

"Mao talks about some of the aspects of onmyodo that have not been focused on in the series, namely the influence of auspicious directions and the role of the onmyoji in determining favorable directional configurations. In Japanese the concept of 方違え (katatagae) deals with this. This deals with things like setting off for a journey days earlier than planned to avoid an unfavorable day, or traveling to a location by an unusual route to avoid an unfavorable direction (方塞がり/katabutagari)."

They have a bit in their cultural notes section that I'll post in the next post.
>>
>>285049016
Here's what they had in the cultural notes:

"In Japanese the concept of 方違え (katatagae) deals with changing directions in order to avoid bad luck. This deals with things like setting off for a journey prior to the planned night to avoid an unfavorable day, or traveling to a location by an unusual route to avoid an unfavorable direction (方塞がり/katabutagari) or even avoiding going from work to your home and instead staying elsewhere until the direction home becomes favorable again. It also deals with days to avoid house renovations and building and other construction projects (including locations and days to begin or cease work) with directions based on the center of the home (so renovating in the northeast part of your home might be auspicious or negative depending on the day).

The onmyodo job of calendar development was concerned with charting the various directions that certain onmyodo-affiliated gods were said to be traveling in or resting at during certain days as it was considered necessary not to walk in the direction of these gods or incur their wraith.

Kojin (金神), the god of metal, is one deity that was to be avoided and was said to be particularly powerful when he occupied the northeast or the southwest (these directions were known as Ushitora and Hitsujisaru). Another god, Teichijin (天一神), also known as Nakagami (中神) is a god of fortune in onmyodo who descends to the northeast on the 46th day of the sexagenary cycle and completes a clockwise circuit, spending five days on each cardinal point and six days on each ordinal point, returning to heaven from the north on the 30th day of the next sexagenary cycle. Travelling in the direction of Ten'ichijin is considered unlucky and must be avoided.

Taihaku (太白), Daishogun (大将軍), Taihaku (太白), The King and the Minister (王相) are the others that must be taken into account when dealing with katatagae."

Nanoka's line regarding the bathhouse was 銭湯なんて生まれて初めてだー。And Otoya's line to Nanoka was 菜花さんかわいい。Furinkan has two notes here:

"Many hotspring towns or bathhouses (銭湯/sento) will give yukata (浴衣) bathrobes as gifts to customers who visit. The yukata are also typically summer fare.
Nanoka says she had help tying the obi (帯) of her yukata. The obi is the large sash or belt around her waist that is tied into a bow at the back."

The man refers to the sister-in-law appropriately as 義姉さん。And refers to his older brother as 兄上. The term used here was not onmyoji, but お祓い屋.
>>
>>285050901
Per Furinkan: "Tatsuhiro's (辰弘) name is not particularly telling or unusual. The kanji are the "zodiac sign of the dragon" and "vast"."
>>
>>285050939
>>
>>285050982
Per Furinkan: "Mao points out that the silver-furred fox is a shikigami similar to when he summoned Genbu the turtle to aid him. It is likely the silver fur is meant to be suggestive of the metal elemental influence of the creature."
>>
>>285051008
Now that I reread that previous note, I realize it doesn't really contain much information.
>>
>>285051020
Another Furinkan note: "The doll being used to cast the curse and having needles driven into it is a "curse doll" (ワラ人形/wara ningyo)."
>>
>>285051071
And one more: "The wooden bird that Mao infuses with a fire elemental spell and throws at the silver fox is called a "katashiro" (形代). Traditionally these are small paper cut outs in the shape of people. They are typically used as a substitution for a human and can be used to absorb curses or bad luck in the place of an afflicted individual."

We've seen this before.

>>285051671
Per Furinkan: "In this chapter we meet Ayame Hosho (宝生綾女). The kanji in her first name means "twill woman"."
>>
>>285051707
VIZ just went with sensei for 先生 this time? Strange. Per Furinkan: "Mao and Nanoka are drinking a beverage called Ramune (ラムネ). This is carbonated lemonade/soda drink that has a marble placed in the neck rather than a pop top or traditional cap. It was introduced to Japan in 1884 by British pharmacist Alexander Cameron Sim."

The sign even says ramune on it.

End of chapter. Kagari refers to Ayame as お姉様 here. The daughters refer to their uncle as 辰弘叔父様. Also, I wonder if Kagari's curses allowed her somehow to break in without being detected or if that's just a different skillset she has.
>>
Furinkan has a note about the cover, but I'll post it in a few pages. I do like this cover though.

March 23rd, 2022. Author's note:

>>285052027
Yeah, must've overlooked it, I guess.
>>
>>285052368
Otoya's line here made me laugh. It was 百足さんですからねぇ。Anyway, here's Furinkan's note regarding the cover:

"On the title page we see Otoya knocking on the door of what must be the centipede ayakashi's home. Appropriately enough the house is incredibly elongated. This style of architecture is known as "machiya" (町屋) which literally translates to "town house". One of the unique architectural features of the machiya is it is narrow but very long. Some examples are around 18 feet (5.4 meters) wide but 66 feet (20 meters) long. Because of their large footprint many machiya have been torn down to make room for high rise apartment buildings and more modern structures. They are particularly associated with Kyoto."

You can see it on this page as well.
>>
>>285052433
Otoya is lucky he's so grabbable.
>>
>>285052530
Nanoka's line in the middle panel was originally いやなんてあんたが摩緒を呼び捨て? but since VIZ didn't translate honorifics, they had to change it.

Furinkan goes on a tangent about this sort of punch to the gut, but it isn't a punch and their discussion of it isn't actually relevant to this chapter so. Also, this sword doesn't really have a pommel from what I can tell. It is just the bottom of the hilt.

Original title was 姉の立場. Also, Furinkan notes that: "MAO will not appear in the next issue of Shonen Sunday (2022 Vol. 20). It might be to give her a break due to publishing a short story this week in Big Comic Original. The short story is Dedicated to S." This is the one-shot I will be posting after MAO.

Per Furinkan: "We see the Hosho family has a car, a real novelty for the 1920s Japan. The first automobiles were not widely available in Japan at the time. In 1902 Komanosuke Uchiyama built the first car in Japan with an engine he acquired in America. He later built the first car made entirely from Japanese parts in 1907. In 1914 Mitsubishi Zosen made his first car, the Model A. The Hosho's automobile resembles a Ford Model A. The vertical split front windshield was more commonly seen in the 1930s." I assume that aspect is just an oversight on Rumiko's.

I really like this moment, and this mini-arc in general, since it injects a lot of humanity into Kagari's characterization. I know she's not that popular among the readership, but I think her motivations fundamentally stemming from being an insecure little girl and Hakubi taking advantage of that fits perfectly with how the Kou clan operates, and it's hard not to feel a little sympathetic for how she's basically just looking for approval.

VIZ's decisions regarding Nanoka's dialog here just make it sound like MAO is rudely interrupting her rather than her trailing off as usual.

Also, per Furinkan: "The Mask of judgment is unusual looking, certainly it owes nothing to the familiar Noh masks that have become quintessential in Japanese culture. Instead, the Mask of judgment seems to more strongly resemble the earlier gigaku (伎楽) masks. It also shares some resembling with the Edo Kappa masks pictured here. The second pictured mask is a Heian era mask that would be period accurate to something that the Goko Clan would have had on hand." I'll post the picture of this mask after the dump.

Furinkan notes that "Upon hearing about the trial by fire that is being given to the villagers, Nanoka thinks that it sounds like a "witch trial" (魔女裁判). End of chapter, end of volume. Thanks anyone who read along, but also thanks anyone who reads it after. I completely understand. No one gave me feedback regarding if they preferred me posting the Japanese line with romanji and a machine translation, so I am going to keep just posting the Japanese line and assuming people who are interested can translate it themselves. I don't want to give people the impression that I have any proficiency in the language.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything MAO related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

So, next Thursday I return to my normal MAO schedule. So, expect Volume 15 this upcoming Thursday. But right now, I will be dumping the Rumic Theater one-shot "Dedicated to S".

Sに捧ぐ (S ni Sasagu) or "Dedicated to S" was published on April 20th, 2022 in Big Comic Original. As such, it was published around the time of these chapters.

This translation is a fanscan which was translated and typeset by one of our anons! I believe this is the only available English translation of this one-shot so I really appreciate the work put into this. We also have the original color pages!

I only read this one today and I thought it was pretty good. It is about a middle-aged man, but it has been a bit since I've read one of these and I appreciated what Rumiko Takahashi did with this one.

End! Yeah. It is low-key but I still enjoyed it. I am glad the reveal was "he wasn't as bad as we expected" rather than he secretly was great. I assume the S in the song was Shiori and the S on the ring was Sei, Occam's razor and all. But you could theorize some more if you'd like. Oh and I want to thank our anon who translated and typeset this for us! Much appreciated as a big Rumic fan who does not speak Japanese. Thanks for the storytime, OP! Fun volume in terms of Nanoka and Mao's relationship and the Kagari stuff, but not a whole lot of main plot action this time around. Saves me from having to update the chart too much, at least.
I'm also happy that you enjoyed the oneshot translation. I recall I originally did it on a whim because Mao happened to be on break the week it came out. I never bothered uploading it anywhere else, and since this was still relatively early in my scanlation career, I was a bit worried that the quality might be less than stellar, but reading it now I think it holds up relatively well. And it's a fun story, all in all.

On that subject, I've finally gotten around to the actual typesetting part of translating Shineba Ii No Ni. I'll see if I can finish it by next time, though since my vacation's ending it might slip into the next week. I'll look into the other oneshot anon posted after that.

Thank you for the translation! While I obviously love all you do for MAO as a series, I must confess your one-shot translations are the stuff I am most excited about as it is like opening a vault of Rumiko Takahashi comics I haven't read before. You should upload any of your work so more eyes can see it. Though I understand the audience for these one-shots is a lot smaller than UY, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, etc.

I don't recall it ever being mentioned, but given that it was the basis for Kagari's family's curses, and the fact that it's explicitly meant for controlling beasts (which are inherently metal-element) I would assume that it's also metal. I mean, it's a needle.

the other four one-shots from that volume however are not available in english, although they are technically available on big comic's site here

there's chinese scans for Nasty Runner and Woman From the Past (with color pages), and there's also a spanish tl for the latter but i found a note on their site saying it was translated from a now lost english tl so it would end up turning into japanese -> english -> spanish -> english
