From what I remember, originally the team was going to do a more classic set-up with giant Ultras and kaiju, and the main character being a police man. They were told to keep the Ultras human sized, and Bandai wanted to make it toyetic. Shimazu was a Kamen Rider geek, and was coming off of his Kamen Rider fan comic being cease-and-desisted from Toei, so he quickly spun up an armor suit Ultraman. A Kamen Rider suit Ultraman. The design itself is very clearly riffing off of Iron Man, though. He's totally ripping off Iron Man, but thats not WHY the Ultras are Iron Men in the manga. The reason is just Tsuru and Bandai politics and merchandising.
I like the designs,they feel knightly but ultramen should be always wearing a latex gimp suit due to being sentient energy beingsKinda like captain atom from dc but with less explosions when rubber breaks
