It looks like some low quality trash at first, it being an adaptation of real life idol group, just screaming cash grab (haha, actually the budget is shoe string and in hindsight it must have been a passion project). What's worse, it has low quality CG and weird artstyle. However what you get are vibrant characters full of life with clear, distinct personalities and believable relationships with each other, including personal drama which rises in a competitive environment and a captivating story, even if a simple one for the most part (though there's more to it). It ends up reaching far beyond its scope, addressing multiple difficult subjects that didn't have to exist in such a show, both on personal and population level. CG remains trash for stuff like crowd but is actually impressive for space ship and mechas, you can definitely tell the show was made by Satelight. If I remember correctly, I still had some worries in early episodes but they were blown away, ended up rating AKB0048 as the hidden gem and the Next Stage was straight up AOTY for me. I really didn't expect I would ever be able to be thrilled by an idol show more than The iDOLM@STER (2011) did. (which is also a funny story because I only checked that one out to see "what is that thing Miura keeps getting delayed by" and ended up absolutely loving)AKB0048 also had the benefit of having some of the best threads in /a/'s history. So much speculation and honest discussion between anons who liked the show, beautiful sight. Reminded me of Sora no Woto, Rinne noLagrande, YuYuYu etc. I suppose this aspect would be lost now, so imapct of the show could be lessened.

Of course, instead of following common sense, it's a far better option to arbitrarily exclude a subset of the year's OPs and EDs from being voted on.
