It's more hyped up than Kuma's flashback felt, but also crossover with the main plot more, despite not necessarily getting a new perspective on scenes we've seen before. It's not nearly as disappointing as Oden's either, but it ended up feeling somewhat bloated and bizarrely meandering, even if it made more sense once we got to the end of it.

The whole truth of Noland and the Shandians, and the tragedy of it all provides the emotional torque for the rest of the arc. It gave things new weight and significance. Oden's didn't really accomplish this, in large part BECAUSE he'd been so hyped up before hand. I'd need to reread it, but the problem to my recollection is that it should've really committed to the idea that he was actually kind of a piece of shit. They start out there, of course, but he's largely gotten over it pretty quickly and the rest is spent establishing why everyone thinks he's so cool (and it kind of started out there to begin with). Him just being more of a piece of shit that nevertheless achieved a heroic end probably would've worked better in this kind of idea of "deriving an emotional gutpunch by revealing the real circumstances of what's going on."
