I was ambivalent about the first one as compared to the anime but the 2nd movie is a definite improvement over the anime, especially the climax. Kittan's death was fantastic in terms of presentation, but it doesn't sit right with me thematically. During the 2nd half of the story, he's depicted as a has-been who didn't fit in. His professional abilities are questionable at best, and he doesn't have much of a personal life. His sisters all kept moving forward in their own way, while he could not. Something held him back from pursuing Yoko which he regrets at the end. To me, his suicidal charge feels more like an escape. Battle and death is something he can deal with better than he could with life. It's a kind of despair and it feels like exactly the kind of mindset that the anti-spirals would want to elicit. But Kittan manages to use the spiral power despite that, and that just doesn't make sense to me.
