Plenty of adaptions turn good source material into garbage. Few turn mediocre source material into actually good stuff. The vast majority are safe and do absolutely nothing to break the mold. This can be particularly egregious with adaptions from manga where the anime feels like a slideshow of manga panels. The direction in this is far from the usual. Slowpaced, long stills, sudden jumps from scene to scene and the shots in general. The sound is phenomenal for a TV anime. Variation of volume, effects, direction, use of silence, bgm. Can't be appreciated properly if you're a nip watching it on your phone with its shitty speakers. These help in creating the atmosphere the show has and suspense, something a lot of anime desperately lack. The somewhat artistic visual style is also something most people notice first. It's nice, I like it, but it's not as crucial. With a different director, this could be more like pic related.

The fact that she wants to win 99 made me interested to see how they were going to handle that and how her character will develop or unveil.
