I liked this bit where Asa laughs about her mother's snappiness and harsh way of talking to people in a loving way, while Makio can only think about how much that hurt her in the past. Really shows how a single person can be interpreted totally differently. Asa's more extroverted and affable personality rolled with her mother's attitude, while Makio's introverted and sensitive personality got beaten hard by it. Also works well to recharacterize the mother. She wasn't just a cruel sister, but instead a could be interpreted as a person that had high expectations and little filter.
