You clearly don't believe Madoka has a story or you would have told me what it was.You could say Madoka is a study on deals with the devil - what would drive someone to make a deal they KNOW is bad? But that's not what it's about, because in Madoka the deal keeps getting worse, the entire story is about how bad the deal actually is. So you could read it as a story about reading the fine print, that things aren't what they seem. But it's not, because Sayaka is really the only one who actually makes the deal in the series. Everyone else already knows how bad it is. The story is about Madoka, not Sayaka, and her decision whether or not to make a deal. You could say it's sort of a story about inevitability or selflessness - that no matter what they say, every character does, effectively, end up sacrificing themselves for others when given a choice. Your sacrifice will inspire someone else to make a larger sacrifice, which will expand outwards until it reaches a critical mass that actually "changes the world". But that's really not the focus of the show - the show focuses on the concept that your wishes will lead to despair that others will have to clean up, not that your sacrifice will inspire them. Sacrifice is the thing people choose to do in order to clean up other peoples' messes because it's portrayed as the cleanest way to do it. So you could call it a show about suicide ideation, which WOULD be very japanese, but I prefer to ignore that sort of theme because Madoka IS a good show and we shouldn't just boil it down to the shittiest possible theme. But at some point you run out of themes to look for and you're forced to conclude that either it's a series about suicide ideation or it's a substanceless twist series that Urobuchi put together purely for its aesthetic value and not out of a desire to tell any kind of story. The second is more palatable to me, so I think that's what it's about.
